Druseidt - Water-cooled high-current cables
- Druseidt - water-cooled high-current cables
Druseidt water-cooled high-current cables are specialised solutions for welding machines, transformers, induction furnaces and industrial power transmission systems where standard connections are not sufficient. Thanks to active water cooling, they enable the transmission of very high currents while minimising conductor heating.
A distinctive feature of these cables is the use of an internal channel for coolant circulation, surrounded by flexible conductive strands made of electrolytic copper. The design ensures excellent flexibility while maintaining high current carrying capacity and resistance to bending cycles. The cables are available in various termination options, lengths, conductive materials and connectors, with the possibility of individual adaptation to specific applications.
Druseidt water-cooled high-current cable technologies
Water-cooled cables are specially adapted for high current transmission and are characterised by optimised current transfer, cooling, wear protection and the use of high-quality materials. Druseidt has been manufacturing them for many years, in standard cross-sections up to 6500 mm² and with cable heads up to 200 mm in diameter.
Druseidt crimp technology - the connection of flexible copper strands with cable heads is achieved by a solderless crimping process under a pressure of hundreds of tonnes. This guarantees an optimised electrical connection and an economical production process. The flexible conductive cables are crimped extensively and optimally compressed. Thanks to the stored machine settings, Druseidt technology is always reproducible, minimising electrical resistance and reducing electrical losses. Compared to soldered cables, crimped designs offer lower electrical resistance, better service life (no heat impact on E-copper conductors, reduced risk of rope breakage) and no tin crystallisation in combination with water and electricity.
Cable heads and cooling - all Druseidt cable heads are made of E-Cu / E-Cu-ETP copper with exceptionally high conductivity. To prevent the cooling water hoses from slipping, they are equipped with a serrated surface. The location and design of the cooling holes are selected to ensure optimal cooling water flow. The cables are supplied without connectors as standard, which can be ordered as accessories.
High-quality Druseidt cooling hoses - cooling hoses are multi-layered, electrically insulated, flame-retardant and self-extinguishing. They ensure good service life even under difficult operating conditions. The maximum permissible operating pressure is 6 bar, and all cables are tested at 10 bar before leaving the factory. The hoses are electrically non-conductive (R > 10^9 Ω), suitable for water temperatures up to +80 °C (short-term up to +110 °C), mechanically very durable and abrasion-resistant.
Protection against abrasion and heat radiation - Druseidt offers various protective solutions to increase the service life of cables in harsh conditions:
- Abrasiv-hose with ‘traffic light’ effect: Standard hose with multi-layer construction and abrasion-resistant outer coating, equipped with a green and red rubber layer for visual wear control.
- Abrasiv-hose with additional abrasion protection: The ideal solution for extreme abrasion problems, without ‘traffic light’ layers, with a total thickness of approx. 20 mm.
- Abrasiv-hose with additional thermal protection: Recommended for problems with heat radiation or metal splashes. It consists of a material resistant to temperatures up to +700 °C with an additional silicone coating resistant to +300 °C.
- Other solutions include: an additional second abrasive hose, mounted protective bumpers or thermal protection made of Therm Textile material.
Druseidt water-cooled cable range:
Water-Cooled High-Voltage Cables (for Mains Frequency) Available as single-core or multi-core cables. Single-core cables are manufactured in cross-sections up to 1000 mm², and multi-core cables from 1200 mm² up to 2000 mm² for mains applications. These cables are ideally suited for mains frequency applications, for example in induction plants in the steel, foundry, non-ferrous metals or glass melting industries.
- They are ideal as space-saving, flexible high-current cables.
- The connection of flexible copper wires to cable heads is achieved by a special, voltage-free crimping process – Druseidt Crimp technology.
- All single-core cables can be equipped with additional clamping elements for easy and secure fastening of longer cables, preventing hose compression and reduced water flow.
- The standard range includes cables with cross-sections from 120 mm² to 2000 mm², with current ratings from 1600 A to 20000 A.
Water-Cooled Hollow Core Cables (for Medium Frequencies) They feature a special core design with a relatively large surface area of flexible internal conductors. These cables are specially designed for medium frequency applications up to 10 kHz.
- Types of internal conductors and connections:
- For frequencies up to 2 kHz: Standard with bare or, on request, tinned internal conductors. Connection to cable heads is achieved by crimping.
- For applications above 2 kHz: Internal conductors with double-enamelled wires are used. This is to take into account the skin effect and increase the effective electrical cross-section and current capacity of the cable. The connection is made by soldering.
- All cables with larger cross-sections are wrapped around a non-magnetic spring core, which keeps them spaced apart, allowing for optimal cooling water flow. The hollow core design allows for greater cooling water flow, resulting in improved heat dissipation.
- Cross-sections from 70 mm² to 1015 mm² are available for frequencies up to 10 kHz, and from 300 mm² to 1000 mm² for frequencies up to 2 kHz, with different current ratings depending on the frequency.
Hollow Core Cables with Pipe Connectors These cables enable watertight, current-conducting connections between cables and high-current pipes. Available with pipe connections on one or both sides. They can be integrated into high-current pipe systems or used as pipe outlets from electric furnaces and other units. They are used, for example, in polysilicon production plants.
- Connectors for pipes with diameters of 28–70 mm are available as standard. Larger sizes or customised solutions are available on request.
- The connection to the cable heads is made using a special, voltage-free Druseidt crimping process.
- They are available in a hexagonal design as standard, and in an octagonal design or as a grooved nut on request.
Water-cooled high-voltage cables for arc furnaces and ladle furnaces They consist of several flexible, braided copper strands (in the range of 400 mm² or 500 mm²), wrapped around a support tube. These specialised cables are used as flexible connections between the electrode arms and the transformer system in electric arc furnaces and ladle furnaces .
- Every second single conductor rope is protected against abrasion by a perforated hose.
- To minimise strong or constant torsional stresses on the cooling water hoses and their connections to the head, it is possible to equip the cable heads with swivel connectors on one side of the cable.
- The connection of copper cables to cable heads is achieved by a special, voltage-free crimping process. This ensures lower electrical resistance, longer service life and no tin crystallisation compared to soldering.
- Cables with cross-sections up to 6500 mm² are available, with examples of designs with 400 mm² or 500 mm² copper strands (total cross-section up to 6500 mm²).
